Birth of the Club
The late Trappie Truter approached Danie van Vuuren, the previous Managing Director of Alusaf (now BHP Billiton), in 1970 with the idea of starting a Club in Richards Bay. The idea of the major industries participating in the growth of the social infrastructure of the town was born.

The Municipality allocated 34 acres of ground on the banks of Mzingazi Lake and also voted R75,000.00 for initial development of the site and construction of a club house. Alusaf as the largest employer in the area agreed to contribute R50,000.00. Construction commenced and with the driving enthusiasm of Trappie and his Alusaf partners, the Club as we know it today became a reality.

Pioneer Fund
The next significant phase in the Club’s history was the establishment in 1977 of the Pioneer’s Fund under the chairmanship of Dr JC van der Walt and the expansion of the club facilities to include the golf course and improvements to the club house. The major contributors to this phase were Richards Bay Minerals and Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

Sponsor Companies
The Constitution of the Club recognised the major companies such as Alusaf, Richards Bay Minerals and Richards Bay Coal Terminal as Sponsor Companies by virtue of their financial contributions.

In this capacity the top management of each company was invited sometime in 1985 to attend a presentation on the future expansion needs of the club. At that time it was felt that the companies had done their bit and it was now up to the Municipality to take over the future funding of sports development in general.

The Municipality accepted this role and steps were implemented to form the Sport Council and the purpose of this organisation was to plan the development of all sports facilities in the Town.

Country Club
In 1985 the Country Club was formed and a motivated group of people under the chairmanship of Peter Cowie set about re-shaping the club with the aim of becoming one of the best clubs in Natal. Mondi took up residence in the town and joined the “Big Three” by contributing R75,000.00 towards the total upgrading of the Club House.
